At least 4 people missing in landslide and floods in Kyushu
At least four people have been reported missing as torrential rain in Japan's southwestern Kyushu region caused landslides and widespread flooding.
Authorities received a call early Monday saying someone had been swept away in a river in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Rescue workers are still conducting a search.
In Kosa Town in the prefecture, one man is unaccounted for after a landslide. Firefighters rescued a woman and two children from a car.
Images taken at around 7 a.m. on Monday in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, show a caved-in road, and two cars stuck in the earth and sand.
According to the members of the fire brigade who took the photos, emergency personnel rushed to the scene, but all the people in the cars escaped on their own.
A video taken at a shopping street around 3 a.m. in Chuo Ward in Kumamoto City show people wading through knee-deep water.
Other parts of Kyushu are also being affected. The police and fire department in Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, say they received a report that a man and a woman in their 60s were swept away in a river and are missing.
The weather is also disrupting transportation. Shinkansen bullet train services have been halted between Hakata and Kagoshima Chuo and multiple sections of expressways across Kyushu are closed.
